Compass Bible Institute at ETS Far West

Compass Bible Institute was well represented at this year’s ETS Far West Regional Meeting, hosted at The Master’s Seminary in Los Angeles on March 27. The Evangelical Theological Society is a scholarly organization committed to the inerrancy of Scripture and the advancement of evangelical theological study. Its regional meetings bring together pastors, professors, and students to present research and engage in careful theological discussion.

This year’s conference included plenary sessions and multiple rounds of academic paper presentations across disciplines such as biblical studies, theology, and church history.

CBI was represented by four presenters, including three faculty members and one student:

  • Dr. Mark Kelley, Provost and Professor of Biblical Studies, presented “John and the Kingdom Tradition: Rewriting a Synoptic Motif.”

  • Dr. John Goodrich, Dean of Academics and Professor of Biblical Studies, presented “The Model of Instruction to Which You Were Delivered: Slave Apprenticeship, Imitatio Christi, and the Elusive Meaning of Romans 6:17.”

  • Mike Elliott, Professor of Theology, presented “What’s in a Name? The Impact of the Divine Name on a Christian Understanding of Forgiveness.”

  • Matthew Wineke, a CBI student, presented “Freedom for Captive Zion: The Jubilee and the Restoration in Isaiah 40–66.”

The presence of both faculty and students in these academic conversations reflects CBI’s commitment to serious engagement with Scripture and the training of men and women who can interpret the Bible faithfully and serve the church effectively.
